Faculty Pages > Faculty Services

The distance learning team at Washington State offers many services to faculty members, such as intensive training, (on-site and off-site), course design and development assistance, and access to resources, etc. The distance learning team works as a service center, and encourages a variety of techniques for online, alternative delivery, and ITV based courses.

Please refer to the list below to help you understand the types of courses that you may choose to develop.

Adoption
Course Management: Some textbooks offer online courseware to use with their books. In this instance, an instructor can use the provided course management system, free of charge, and students will also have access to it free of charge, As long as the instructor remains with the publisher and the textbook.

Course Content: Some course content and materials may be offered by the publisher; content delivery still depends on the faculty member.

Pre-packaged course management toolkits are offered by publishers such as:

Dissemination
Purchase of third-party course content. Usually the content is specifically designed for online/videotape delivery. A presentation system may also be available with the online system.

Examples of such systems are MediaPlusPro, Ed2Go, and SkillsSoft. This method can be used for specific requirements (market niche), where typically a college does not have the course offered through the catalog. It is easier to outsource it through a third party. Each student who signs up for the course has to pay a separate licensing fee. (like content syndication). In such a scenario, the college receives only a percentage of the revenue generated.

Adaptation
Course Management: Course management system provides a structure for communicating with students in the course, providing information about assignments, possible chat rooms or discussion groups, etc.

Course Content: Much of course content is purchased from a third party. Often the content is specifically designed for online/videotape delivery. A presentation system may also be available with the online system.

Innovation
Innovation can be defined as where an instructor either develops his or her own web page and/or videotape.

Course Management: Course management system provides a structure for communicating with students in the course, providing information about assignments, possible chat rooms or discussion groups, etc.

Course Content: The instructor generate some amount of content, and then to populate that content onto the target delivery media. An example would be using Claroline as the course management system, but the instructor would also be uploading their content, specific instructions, and digitized audio and video to enhance the online course offering. Another scenario would be that the instructor will utilize WebCT, offered by OLN, and converts the existing on campus course content to the online and/or video tape format.
